(Fe)Male: Casey Legler

Androgyny has long been a staple in the worlds of music and fashion. Both men and women have swapped roles, clothing and identities to great effect. One of the latest to straddle the increasingly blurry line is “art maker” and model Casey Legler, who recently landed a contract with Ford Models. But, before you go look her up, know that you won’t find her name alongside Charlott or Karolin.  Legler has been signed to Ford to model exclusively as a man. One of Legler’s friends, photographer Cass Bird (who is amazing), asked her to step in at the last minute on photo shoot for Muse magazine. Bird showed the photos to an agent at Ford and Legler was offered a position on the men’s roster the next day. “Is it a stretch for me to get styled wearing men’s clothes?” Legler asks, rhetorically. “I think the part that can feel complicated sometimes is that I also look really fierce in a dress.” She’s not using her new position as some sort of gimmick, but rather as part of a deeper story; a commentary on perception and barriers. “It would be a lovely place if we didn’t necessarily judge or jump to conclusions because someone wants to wear a dress or because someone wants to wear pants.” Bravo.
