In this video tutorial, I’ll show you how to non-destructively dodge & burn your photographs using Photoshop Elements 9. First, what do I mean by non-destructive and why do you need it? Using the standard dodge & burn tools in Photoshop actually destroys the original pixel data in the image. Meaning, once applied, you can no longer make changes or tweaks to the affected areas (you can use the history during the session, but once you save and exit, you’re done). Non-destructive dodge & burn uses blend modes applied to an additional layer, allowing you to “paint on” the dodge & burn effect, without damaging your original image. This is a much better solution as it allows more control, more flexibility and most importantly it gives you an exit strategy, should you ever want to make future tweaks or changes, even after saving the image.
