Faking 3D Text in Photoshop

One of my favorite shows on television at the moment is Fringe, which is odd, since I really couldn’t get into the first couple episodes. Anyway, the first episode of season four aired last week and while I was watching it, I was reminded of how cool the 3D location titles are that appear throughout the episodes. It’s not that we’ve never seen this effect before, we have, and we’ve seen it done better. The opening titles of Panic Room, for example. Still, I love the effect and thought it might be fun to do a tutorial on one technique for achieving a similar look, without using the 3D tools in Photoshop CS5. In this particular case, I think not using 3D, but rather faking it, yields great results. Plus, it has the added bonus of being accessible to those of you using Photoshop Elements, Pixelmator (which I love, but more on that in another post), or a number of other image editing apps.

Why not try these techniques on your own and post your results to our Facebook page. We’d love to see what you come up with.
