Paradigm Shift – Jaime Ibarra

Paradigm - Jaime Ibarra

Jaime Ibarra may just be one of the most talented photographers you’ve never heard of. Yet, over the last couple of years, the Spanish-born, Aussie-raised, Austin-based photographer has developed a near rabid following on the venerable portfolio site Deviant Art, with views of his images regularly in the tens of thousands. One of his newest images, Paradigm (above) clocked in over 30,000 views on the first day alone. Another image, Lucy in Disguise, has had a staggering 1.5 Million views, and at the same time has generated heated debate among commenters. While most gush over the photograph, others take a more antagonistic tone, citing the piece as racist and even condemning Ibarra for “cultural appropriation”. His photographs, as well as the often personal stories behind them, have earned Ibarra a loyal following amongst Deviants the world over. But, it’s his signature post-processing and color grading techniques that leave other photographers fawning over him.

A former Graphic Designer, Ibarra’s seamless compositing and lush color work are the result of years of tweaks and refinements, which have evolved into an instantly recognizable visual style. His photographic vision has earned him features in projects and publications all over the world. It’s also the subject of much speculation on various photography forums, such as Model Mayhem. Ibarra is constantly asked about the secrets behind his look, secrets he is only too happy to share…for a price. As it happens, Ibarra teaches his signature color grading techniques in one-on-one tutorial sessions over the internet.
