Photography contests can be intimidating, at least they always have been for me. There is so much talent out there and when you start playing the comparison game, you always lose. Still, sometimes you have to take a chance. All you are risking is a bit of time and maybe a few bucks (depending on the competition) and you never know what entering (and possibly winning) will do. The first photography contest I entered completely changed the trajectory of my career. Taking the time to send in those photographs became a pivotal point in my life. I was at a point when I wasn’t sure what the future held for me. Being one of the winners of that contest sent me on a path which I never would have foreseen. If you have ever debated entering a contest with one of your photos, you may want to take a look at this one. This year’s National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest has been extended through July 11th and the prizes are incredible – a National Geographic Galápagos Photography Expedition; a Santa Fe Workshop; a National Geographic Traveler Seminar; and $200 gift certificates to B&H Photo. The entry fee is only $25 (increased from $15 with the extended deadline), with the four categories being Travel Portraits, Outdoor Scenes, Sense of Place, and Spontaneous Moments. These are just a few of the incredible images that have already been submitted. Why not take today to look at some of your own photographs, then take a chance and enter.
