Having been a fan of Mark Jenkins’ work for several years now, I was excited to find some of his new work (at least new to me) had been posted. Jenkins’ first street projects were casts of his body made out of clear packing tape. He installed them on the streets of Rio de Janeiro in 2003. More recently he has begun to dress his casts in order to create hyper-realistic sculptures. I can imagine seeing these hyper-real pieces in person would be quite jarring at first. I did hear that there were quite a few 911 calls made when the girl on the billboard made an appearance. He sees the practice of street art as using the street as a stage where passersby become actors. He says, “Interfacing street sculpture in public space creates an installation environment that turns regular space into art space. Signs and people and everything around a street sculpture—they all become part of it. A two-dimensional work, being confined to surfaces, doesn’t have as much of a capacity.”
