Our lives can get overwhelming at times. Stresses about work and relationships and finances can constantly threaten to suffocate us. We all need time away for ourselves, which is why I love these photographs. Romain Laurent uses digital compositing to insert a lone surfer into the downtown streets of New York City. These images show what it means to need an escape and find it, even in the middle of skyscrapers, cars, and thousands of people around. The surfer is not aware of his surroundings. In his mind he is alone and miles away from the busyness of life. This may be his only out for the moment. Sometimes that is all we have, our dreams and fantasies, but sometimes it’s enough.
