If David Fincher was a still photographer, he might be Gregory Crewdson. Both are brilliant visual artists that share a similar, near-pathological attention to detail and, like Fincher, Crewdson creates fully realized worlds to tell the story of his vision. For more than 10 years, Crewdson has been making Hopper-esque photographs that portray life in small-town America, blurring the lines between reality and fiction through imagery that is often haunting and occasionally disturbing. A new documentary film, premiering at SXSW, takes a look at the life, the work and the process of this incredible photographer. His photographs have been called single-frame feature films, not only for the sheer scope of the production team behind them, but also for their amazing narrative power. “To me,” Crewdson says, “the most powerful moment in the whole process is when everything comes together and for that instance, my life makes sense.”
