We were first introduced to the incredible work of Michael Eastman at last year’s Photo LA (which we highly recommend attending). Entirely self-taught, Eastman has spent more than forty years making large-scale “urban landscapes” that capture the colors and textures of the passing of time. His project Vanishing America is an intimate look at many of the near-forgotten small town facades that once seemed so new and full of promise. Eastman looked to the work of Eugene Atget and Walker Evans to inspire his decade-long photo project, Faded Elegance: Photographs of Havana, which consists of twenty-nine images, printed at 6×7 1/2 feet. Despite the decaying nature of the interiors and the facades, the photographs capture the colors and the character of Cuba’s changing landscape over the course of the project. Gorgeous.
