Artistry/Technology

“A brush is technology. A brush. The first technology is brushes, pencils, pens. Things like that are technology of course.” – David Hockney

The global multidisciplinary cultural organization, Liberatum, is exploring the boundaries between creativity and the tools makers use to express it in a fascinating new short called Artistry/Technology. In addition to David Hockney (who has long embraced digital creation tools, including the Quantel Paintbox, the iPhone and the iPad), interviewees include Francis Ford Coppola, Frank Gehry and Ed Ruscha, all of whom discuss the interplay and relationships that exist between art and technology. As Hockney points out at the start of the piece, “a brush is technology.”
