Up Close: Macro Photography With Andrew S Gibson
Being a macro photographer, I was very excited when I heard about Craft & Vision’s new eBook by Andrew S Gibson. I am always interested in getting advice from other photographers on how to get better shots and, knowing that Andrew always comes up with quality eBooks, I knew Up Close would be a good one. He did not disappoint. The first section is all about the equipment. Andrew goes into great detail over what you need and how to get away with less. It doesn’t always take an expensive macro lens with a fixed aperture, sometimes you can use what you already have in your kit. I did find the first section to be a little technical for me (I am not one of those who spends hours mulling over the inner workings of the camera), but there were still quite a few helpful things in there that I had not known (such as using close-up lenses or reversing and stacking lenses that you do have). I know, however, that there are plenty of people out there who love that kind of gear talk, so this eBook definitely will appeal to them.
The second section is all about technique, and Andrew concentrates on how to get the shots you want once you have the equipment. He talks about how to focus, how to get the sharpest images possible, how to get the depth-of-field you want, and how to use the light (whether it’s natural light or even off-camera flash). He goes into great depth for each section and has a ton of examples for how he got each shot. The book also features case studies (along with some beautiful images) from two fantastic (and different) macro photographers, Mandy Disher and Celine Steen, who share some of their tips for making better macro photographs.
I think what I like most about this eBook is how Gibson emphasizes the simplicity of macro photography. It is not complicated and does not take a lot of expensive equipment. He breaks it down to show that it doesn’t matter who or where you are – you can do it, even just using your own backyard.
