Until The Kingdom Comes – Simen Johan

When you first look at this series of photographs they look peaceful and serene, beautiful animals that are seemingly at home in their environments. Then you look closer and realize that something is not quite right, only you aren’t sure what it is. Norwegian artist, Simen Johan, has created something just a little bit off in these images of wild animals. Shooting different types of plants and animals in natural preserves, zoos, farms, museum dioramas and his studio; he takes the separate pieces and composites them together beautifully into new environments he creates. There is a great paradox in these images. He creates worlds which show both the paradise of the natural world coexisting the the darkness. Johan says the series, entitled Until the Kingdom Comes, “refers less to religious or natural kingdoms and more to the human fantasy that one day, in some way, life will come to a blissful resolution. …In reality where understanding is not finite and in all probability never will be, I depict ‘living’ as an emotion-fueled experience, engulfed in uncertainty, desire and illusion.”
