Spellbinding Portraits by Greg Ponthus
I came across the portfolio of Greg Ponthus by chance. He was featured on The DPhoto who said they just happened to find him on Flickr. It’s incredible to me how people you have never heard of before all of a sudden catch your eye and you wonder why they aren’t everywhere. The work by Greg Ponthus is simply breathtaking. Although I titled this “Spellbinding Portraits”, that may be a bit misleading. Even though there is a person, who is the main subject in each image, the photographs seem to be more vignettes of people’s lives. I would almost use the word snapshot except that makes it sound like there is really no thought behind them and that is clearly not the case. His images are captivating and charming. I love how he uses the natural light to establish the mood of the images. It isn’t harsh and overbearing, but muted and subdued, entirely appropriate to the subject matter. The way he photographs seems to be very intuitive, like he knows exactly what he wants and is able to capture it without thinking. He has a lot more on his Flickr page which is worth checking out.
