If you want to see fantastic examples of classic typography and retro design, sometimes all you need to do is look up. Photographer Marc Shur has photographed a great collection of vintage signage from all over California. Shur says, “I’ve always been drawn to old things—the worn, the distressed, the forgotten. Many of the signs I’ve photographed are virtually invisible to most people. They pass them every day but they don’t really see them. Their colors have faded, their paint is peeling and they can’t compete with all the new, shiny things around them.” It’s amazing how many of these vintage beauties we recognize and are within a half hour of where we live. From liquor stores and motels to restaurants and bowling alleys. You don’t realize how much character some of these signs have until you see them next to the brand new strip mall that goes up near them. So much for progress.
