Amazing Phone Book Carvings by Alex Queral

Albert Einstein

I tend to get really irritated when the new phone books come out. Who really uses them anymore? It seems like such a waste in a day when we are all supposedly trying to recycle. This is why I love what Alex Queral has done. What has become completely useless to most people has become a medium of art for him. Taking phone books that have been left out for recycling, Queral carves out these incredibly detailed portraits, using only a sharp  X-ACTO® knife and a small jar of black acrylic medium to set and enhance the detail. Despite the simple tools, there is nothing simple about the process. Each face can take two weeks to complete and appear to just pop off the page and come to life. The amount of detail is amazing.  Queral says, “In carving and painting a head from a phone directory, I’m celebrating the individual lost in the anonymous list of thousands of names that describe the size of the community. In addition, I like the idea of creating something that is normally discarded every year into an object of longevity.”
